What I’m about to reveal is probably a little TMI, but I’m going to tell you anyway. If you’ve read any of my blogs, you already know that I’m used to living at or below the poverty level, but what you may not know is that things got so bad while I was raising my kids, I had to claim bankruptcy back in the 90s. I’m not proud of it. I wanted to pay my bills, but my measly income, no matter where I worked, was no match for my expenses. And I’m not talking designer clothes or expensive handbags; I’m talking housing expenses, book bags, school supplies, kids’ clothes, food, etc.
Anyway, my bankruptcy attorney was a very heavy woman who was also absolutely stunning. She looked like an oversized model who wore clothes that were so beautiful, I just kept wondering how overweight women ever got such a bad rap. She wore her beautiful long hair straight, and she always managed to find clothes that looked sensational on her. I don’t know if she had a personal stylist, but she was gorgeous in everything she wore. So I wondered, why do people make fun of fat people and group them all together as if they’re one person? Is it because Make-Funners (yes, I made up that phrase) are cruel and they find heavier people easier to pick on? I never understood that imbecilic thought process.
I’ll be honest, though, what we wear does sometimes provoke opinions from others. If I see somebody with bulging and exposed fat rolling out of clothing, for instance, I think it looks disgusting, too. I would never wear tight-fitting shirts over my extensive tummy blubber. Nor would I wear midriff shirts and a belly ring to show it off. Not gonna happen – ever – unless somebody invents the home liposuction kit, gives me one for coming up with the idea, and I get a flat belly as a result.
And now let’s talk about Melissa McCarthy – an adorable madcap, high-in-demand actress who is so cute, you can almost not stop looking at her. Add to that her amazing acting abilities (her expressions are priceless) and you can’t help but think that this co-star of Mike and Molly, who has appeared in numerous television shows and movies over the years), and who is intelligent, funny, and beautiful, is just plain sexy.
Her cousin, Jenny McCarthy, is one of the prettiest girls I’ve ever seen. When I was growing up, a common saying was, “Men don’t make passes at girls who wear glasses.” As a result of my belief in that comment, I got contacts when I was 16, not only because of that comment, but also because of my hatred for those glasses and how I looked in them. Back then glasses manufacturers made glasses to be functional, not beautiful. But I hated my contacts too. They bothered my eyes and every time I got something in my eyes, which happened practically every day on my walk to work, my eyes would fill with so many tears, I couldn’t see anything in front of me and I found myself walking into poles on my way to my numerous jobs in windy downtown Chicago.
But then Jenny came along – wearing glasses – have you seen Jenny in glasses? As one of the co-hosts on The View, she rocks those things. I wish she had been around when I was a kid, but considering she’s 3 years younger than my oldest daughter…then again, with a face that beautiful, you could probably put those ugly old-fashioned glasses on her face and she’d still be beautiful. With or without glasses, Jenny is sexy and a beauty even when she’s wearing glasses.
Here’s a side story I thought you might enjoy reading – Jenny and I (and Melissa by extension) are linked in a way – her father worked with my former father-in-law on Chicago’s southwest side. Yes, we’re all supposedly connected by 6º of separation – this situation brings it down to 2º 😉
OK, back to this blog. In keeping with the tone of it, I’d like to introduce you to (or if you’ve already seen the movie, Little Miss Sunshine), I’d like to remind you of a concept that I absolutely agree with – true beauty is not something the media created for numb-minded individuals; true beauty gleams from the soul and beams from the eyes. Physical beauty can fade, especially in people who have ugly characters. Trust me – by the time you get to my age, the people you thought were beautiful when you were younger, when their true characters break through the surface of that beauty, and they are repulsive and hateful beings, what you find is pure ugliness.
In the movie, Little Miss Sunshine, little girl Olive is eager to try out for a beauty pageant. She does not fit the image of other child beauty contestants who wear thousand dollar outfits, get their hair done by expensive stylists, and wear whorish makeup. Her grandfather, who feels about children’s beauty pageants the way I do, choreographs her dance for the talent part of the show. Here’s a clip to show you why I applaud it for its ingenuity:

Afterword: If you haven’t seen Little Miss Sunshine, you’re missing out on a great experience. That 2006 movie remains one of my all-time favorites. Starring Abigail Breslin, Greg Kinnear, Paul Dano, Alan Arkin, Toni Collette, and Steve Carell, among others, including Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston and Dean Norris, this movie is worth taking time to watch.
