How Equal Is Your Marriage or Partnership?

I would like to introduce to you a fictitious couple – Wifey and Husbo. Wifey is an accommodating soul who works outside the home at the local Walmart eight hours a day. She married Husbo about five years ago. They have three children, ages 4, 2, and 6 months. Husbo has an eight-hour a day job too.

And now I would like to show you what happens when they both leave work. Husbo drives home and pops open a beer. He grabs the remote and waits on the couch for Wifey, who first has to go to the daycare to pick up her children and then has to go grocery shopping because Husbo called from the couch to say they were running low on beer. Wifey needs milk for the kids anyway, so she drags her three children out of their car seats and into the store to buy milk and beer.

When Wifey returns, Husbo stays on the couch while Wifey brings in all the groceries (Husbo called to ask for several more items), gets the kids out of their car seats, and brings them and the diaper bag into the house.

After putting away the groceries, unloading the dishwasher from the night before, and tending to the children, Wifey prepares dinner. The children of course are hungry by now, because they haven’t eaten in hours. They are crying and fussy, but Husbo is now asleep on the couch and even the 2-year old jumping on his chest can’t seem to wake his daddy.

Husbo does wake up, however, when he smells food.

Wifey sits next to the baby in one high chair and the 2-year old in another high chair, feeding both of them at the same time, while Husbo complains that he has to cut the 4-year old’s meat.

Before Wifey gets an opportunity to eat, Husbo has already left the table and gone back to the couch complaining that he has had an exhausting day.

Wifey fills the dishwasher, gives baths to all of the kids, puts their diapers and pajamas on, brushes their teeth, combs their hair, and puts them to bed. She then sorts the laundry, takes out, folds, and hangs up the clothes that were in the dryer, and puts the load that was in the washer into the dryer.

Husbo calls out, “What the hell is taking you so long?”

Oh, such a sad story, and I hate to admit it, but I lied. This couple is not fictitious. They probably live right next door to you. What? They don’t? They are actually you and your spouse? Aren’t you glad I disguised your names?

Well, guess what – I have help for you. Read 68 Questions on How to Tell If Your Marriage or Relationship is a True Partnership to find out who contributes more to the relationship (you already know though, don’t you). Once your spouse sees in BLACK and WHITE who does what, things might improve!

AFTERWORD – Wifey forced Husbo to take the quiz with the threat that if he didn’t she would never buy another beer. Husbo now contributes to the chore list and has discovered that he actually enjoys cooking. Boxing up all of his clothes and throwing them into the garage may have impacted his decision too, but he now helps with laundry as well. As a result of taking the quiz, Wife and Husbo now have a more equal partnership.
